Skip to Second Quest
At the File Select screen, select REGISTER YOUR NAME. Enter your name as ZELDA and you will not play the original game but you'll skip straight to the second quest, with the items and dungeon shapes rearranged.
Unlock your first door
When you go to level 1 (located from the start: east, north, north, north, north, west), enter the dungeon. Don't do anything else! Exit immediately! Re-enter, and you should see that the first door (the top door) is unlocked. The extra key will come in handy later in your quest.
Get to West Hyrule without the stepladder
If you go to the Lost Woods (the screen in the forest that repeats itself endlessly), you'll be trapped in there until you go East. The Lost Woods also can take you to Western Hyrule (where the graveyard is) if you take the following path through the lost woods: North, West, South, West.
